Women with disabilities in Ghana represent a marginalized group whose access to economic opportunities is often severely restricted. Through intentional planning and outreach to communities of people with disabilities, <\/span>YCI\u2019s <\/span>HerStart<\/span> program <\/span>has been able to <\/span>provide<\/span> young women with entrepreneurship skills, confidence, <\/span>mentorship<\/span> and business development resources to support their business journey.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

According to the 2021 Population Housing and Census, p<\/span>ersons<\/span> with disabilities <\/span>make up<\/span> eight percent of Ghana\u2019s population<\/span> (<\/span>more than two million<\/span> people<\/span>)<\/span>, yet <\/span>very little<\/span> is done to provide these groups of people with sustainable economic opportunities. People with disabilities, especially women, are often unable to pursue economic opportunities due to a lack of access to information, a lower level of education, poor access to resources <\/span>and<\/span> mobility aids<\/span>,<\/span> and a lack of targeted interventions tailored to their needs. Though their business ideas may be strong, for th<\/span>e<\/span> women that are able to start a business<\/span>,<\/span> there is still limited support for them to grow. The YCI <\/span>HerStart<\/span> Ghana team recognized the ability of the <\/span>HerStart<\/span> program to fulfill the need for accessible programming and support these young women to realize their potential in sustainable entrepreneurship.\u202f<\/span><\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Because additional specialized resources and planning are required to appropriately and effectively engage people with disabilities, the YCI Ghana team embarked on a series of co-design meetings with the Ghana Society of Persons with Disabilities (GSPD) about how the training could benefit women with disabilities and what special considerations would be needed to ensure the training was inclusive and accessible. <\/span>The GSPD was able to provide an accessible space to train participants for the social entrepreneurship curriculum, which was also closer to the centre of town to facilitate their transportation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

15<\/span> women with physical disabilities and two young women guides of physically disabled women <\/span>participated<\/span> in <\/span>HerStart\u2019s<\/span> S<\/span>parking Social Innovation (SSI) training<\/span> in collaboration with <\/span>the Ghana Society of Persons with Disabilities<\/span>, implemented by <\/span>Norsaac<\/span> and YCI. Participants were introduced to social entrepreneurship <\/span>concepts <\/span>and prompted to consider how they could start their own business, generate a sustainable income and have a positive impact on their communities.<\/span><\/p>\n

“The <\/span>Herstart<\/span> program has been the best training I have <\/span>participated<\/span> in. I have attended some trainings in the <\/span>past<\/span> but this has enabled me<\/span> to<\/span> start a business by researching, keeping <\/span>records<\/span> and innovating on my product. This has been beneficial to me as a person with disability. I did not <\/span>not<\/span> know that I could be integrated into YCI <\/span>programming<\/span> but they allow all kind of persons to be trained <\/span>in order to<\/span> handle my business. We were equally treated as the abled people. I felt motivated and confident to be part of the training because I was not <\/span>discriminated.<\/span>”
\n<\/span><\/i><\/b>– Florence <\/span>Anaba<\/span>, who started a business making beaded bags, <\/span>sandals<\/span> and key holders<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Engaging women with physical disabilities in <\/span>HerStart<\/span> trainings has boosted their confidence <\/span>interacting with program staff<\/span> and <\/span>increased<\/span> their knowledge on how to manage their businesses. At the first training<\/span>, <\/span>participants were reserved and not interactive, but after several days of meeting they began <\/span>opening up<\/span> to trainers and talking to them about the ideas they <\/span>are passionate about<\/span>. The <\/span>HerStart<\/span> team also gained experience <\/span>and knowledge on<\/span> how<\/span> best <\/span>to <\/span>implement trainings by understanding the challenges women with disabilities face and designing solutions that better support them. For instance<\/span>,<\/span> the team energizers that are normally done standing were adapted to be done seated, and participants were provided with <\/span>additional<\/span> encouragement to overcome a lack of confidence to speak about their business ideas and receive feedback.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“We had the chance to interact, share ideas and ma<\/span>k<\/span>e new friends to promote our businesses. We enjoyed the training sessions because YCI and partners understand the needs of people living with physical disabilities. They made available convenient and accessible training centers <\/span>and also<\/span> their facilitators kept\u202fencouraging and motivating us throughout the training sessions. W<\/span>ith YCI, we are all equal.<\/span> Before<\/span> the training I ha<\/span>d<\/span> very little<\/span> knowledge about innovation, basic computing skills, researching and social enterprise<\/span>s<\/span> that solv<\/span>e<\/span> social, <\/span>economic<\/span> and environmental problems in my community whilst making money.<\/span>\u00a0I recommend the training to every young lady living with physical disabilities to take part in the YCI <\/span>HerStart<\/span> life<\/span>–<\/span>changing program to empower their lives<\/span><\/span>.<\/span>“<\/span><\/i><\/b>
\n<\/span>– Asana Salifu, who started a <\/span>business processing melon seeds<\/span> into powder<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The <\/span>team<\/span> will<\/span> continue to explore solutions to <\/span>barriers<\/span> for<\/span> young<\/span> women<\/span> with<\/span> physical<\/span> disabilities<\/span> participating<\/span> in the program. For <\/span>example<\/span>, transportation to the training centre <\/span>was<\/span> more <\/span>difficult<\/span> for <\/span>those<\/span> with<\/span> physical<\/span> disabilities<\/span>, as <\/span>they<\/span> have to carry <\/span>wheelchairs<\/span> or <\/span>other<\/span> devices<\/span>. The <\/span>team<\/span> will<\/span> also<\/span> continue discussions <\/span>with<\/span> organizations<\/span> who<\/span> may<\/span> be<\/span> able to <\/span>provide<\/span> training supports, <\/span>such<\/span> as <\/span>interpretation<\/span>, for a <\/span>reduced<\/span> or <\/span>low<\/span> cost<\/span>.<\/span> This <\/span>way<\/span>,<\/span> more <\/span>marginalized<\/span> young<\/span> women<\/span> can have an <\/span>opportunity<\/span> to explore social <\/span>entrepreneurship<\/span> as <\/span>a<\/span> source of <\/span>livelihood<\/span> and solution for the challenges <\/span>their<\/span> communities<\/span> are <\/span>facing<\/span>. <\/span><\/p>\n
