YCI Scholarships Available: Costa Rica & Guatemala Summer 2010YCI is proud to be able to offer scholarships to support youth volunteer participation in our Central American projects this summer.
Youth Challenge International (YCI) is awarding a limited number of $1,500 ($1,300 USD) scholarships to exceptional youth (aged 18 to 30). These scholarships can be used towards five-week youth development projects in either Costa Rica or Guatemala this summer and will be awarded to individuals with a demonstrated commitment to their community. The scholarship is intended to provide young leaders with the opportunity to turn positive civic involvement into global action. They are merit based and will be awarded on a rolling first-come, first-served basis.
About the placement in Costa Rica:
This exciting opportunity will include a pre-project distance-learning program, followed by an intensive five-week placement in Carrera Buena, Costa Rica. While in Costa Rica, you will work with YCI’s partner, Reto Juvenil Internacional, to further the reach and relevance of their youth development program.
Key project activities may include:
o Support the Community Development Association in the construction of a soccer field and associated infrastructure to increase access to recreational spaces for local youth to improve their physical and mental health o Conduct ESL and basic computer classes with local youth o Facilitate local youth involvement in program activities, with a particular emphasis on leadership development and peer-to-peer education o Promote Earth Charter principles and participate in environmental initiatives and education
About the placement in Guatemala:
This exciting opportunity will include a pre-project distance-learning program, followed by an intensive five-week placement in El Novillero, Guatemala. While in Guatemala, you will work with YCI’s partner, Reto Juvenil Internacional, to help support the re-construction of the community’s eco-tourism project, Corazon Del Bosque.
Key project activities may include: o Support the re-construction of eco-trails and facilities destroyed by the recent natural disaster o Organize and teach basic English classes to the local youth and members of the eco-tourism project o Run a women’s action workshop to promote women’s rights o Support members of the community in marketing their eco-tourism project

1. Eligibility criteria:
o Applicants must be between 18 and 30 years of age o Applicants must be applying for YCI’s five-week summer project in Costa Rica or Guatemala (departing July 12, 2010) o Scholarships must be used towards the Costa Rica or Guatemala program
2. Scholarship entries must be submitted alongside an online application:
o Submit an online application o Please indicate on your application (in the “program preference” area) that you’re interested in applying for the “Costa Rica/Guatemala Scholarship Program.” o Submit your scholarship essay, photo essay or video entry via email to generalinfo@yci.org. Tell us:
“How would a volunteer opportunity with YCI contribute to your understanding of what it means to be a global citizen?”
In order to apply, submit one of the following on the above topic to YCI:
• Personal Essays: Must be between 600 and 800 words in length and submitted in .doc format. • Photo Essays: Must be less than 20 photos and include captions. This may be submitted through a PowerPoint presentation or PDF format. • Video Entries: Must be no more than three minutes in length. To submit your video, please upload your submission onto YouTube and provide the link to YCI. Videos may also be submitted through email or mail. Use only original or royalty-free music and images in your video.
Applications will be accepted on a rolling first-come, first-served basis.
