Nicaragua

Nicaragua is one of the poorest countries in Central America. The country’s political instability and prevalent corruption is not only a serious threat to democracy, but has also resulted in extreme poverty.

Nicaragua’s high poverty rates, as well as nutritional and educational deficiencies restrict it from achieving its full potential. In partnership with Reto Juvenil Internacional (RJI), YCI’s programs in Nicaragua aim to increase both education and nutritional levels in the communities of Matiguas, as well as facilitate economic development opportunities for community members.

Located in the province of Matagalpa, in the region of Matiguas - the heart of the coffee and milk production - our joint program has objectives that include developing opportunities for economic development, the empowerment of local youth, and the improvement of health and education levels.

YCI offers Youth Ambassador projects in Nicargua. Working in a team with the support of RJI staff, volunteers will work to improve the social and economic welfare of communities.

As a volunteer in Nicaragua you may:

  • Partner with local groups, including the Local Development Association and ANIDES (Nicaraguan Sustainable Development Association)
  • Create economic development opportunities for the communities in Matiguas
  • Conduct community assessments and implement projects in education and youth development to empower youth in leadership and life skills.
  • Provide support to local teachers.
  • Work in activities related to agriculture and the production of vegetables and fruits, which can help to improve nutrition levels.
For information on project dates, please refer to the Program Calendar.
