ALUMNI MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

As a returned volunteer, you have a wealth of knowledge you can share with volunteers who are preparing to head overseas to work on a YCI project. The Alumni Mentorship Program (AMP) is a way for you to share all of your programming insight, project stories and advice with the people who need it most.

How do I get involved?
If you’re interested in becoming a mentor, get in touch with YCI’s Volunteer Communications Coordinator. YCI will then add your name, location and email address to the Alumni Mentorship list, which is only accessible to preparing volunteers. This list allows preparing volunteers to identify and contact returned volunteers in their regional area.

What would I have to do?
Be available to preparing volunteers to help them get ready for their project by:

  • Answering their questions about your project, recommending some methods of fundraising, making packing recommendations, or telling them about your project and programming.
  • Attending volunteer events and activities to support their fundraising initiatives, when and if possible.
  • Checking in with them after they return to welcome them home and to help them deal with re-entry, culture shock and processing their experience.

What if I don’t have all the answers?
Be honest. Just tell them you don’t know and get in touch so we can tell you the answer. Or ask the volunteer to give us a shout to answer the question.

Do I have to give out my phone number?
That’s up to you. Some people are better on the phone and some people prefer to communicate by e-mail.

Do I have to meet anyone in person?
That’s totally up to you. You may want to get together with preparing volunteers to show them your photos from project, or attend one of their fundraising events. If you would rather just keep contact to e-mail, that’s fine, too!

What if I change my mind?
We understand if your schedule changes, or if you find the Mentor commitment too much. Just let us know and we will remove you from the program.
