Programs
Youth Ambassadors
YCI has been sending volunteers overseas for over 20 years and the Youth Ambassadors program provides a safe and unique opportunity to volunteer internationally. Projects vary in length, with year-round departure dates.

Working directly with YCI staff, partners and peer educators, Youth Ambassadors implement projects focused within our key sectors as part of a short-term team placement. Experience international development at the grassroots level, develop intercultural communication skills and make a valuable contribution to your global community.

Key Features:
  • Ideal for individuals aged 18 and up.
  • Team-based programs of five to 10 weeks.
  • Year-round departure dates with multiple program, country and sector-focus options.
  • Rolling sign-up is ideal for gap years, co-ops or summer breaks. You can apply any time.
  • Countries: Guyana, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Vanuatu, Kenya, Ghana or Tanzania.
  • Fundraising targets range from $3,000 to $3,900.

Youth Innovators
The Youth Innovators program offers short-term specialized projects that focus on a specific programming objective in Kenya, Tanzania or Ghana. This program is an opportunity for volunteers with an academic or work background related to one of YCI’s sectors, as well as previous overseas experience, to participate in a short-term specialized team project.

Working directly with YCI staff, partners and peer educators, implement CIDA programming objectives, complete reporting and budget tracking, improve your program management and implementation skills and gain valuable international experience.

Key Features:
  • Ideal for individuals aged 21 and up.
  • Team-based programs of four to five weeks.
  • Multiple departure dates to accommodate academic credit or a unique sabbatical.
  • The opportunity to focus on a key sector of interest.
  • Countries: Ghana, Kenya or Tanzania.
  • Subsidized placements, with fundraising targets ranging from $500 to $1,000.

Youth Leadership Teams
Youth Leadership Teams are customized volunteer projects for pre-existing groups with specific skills and backgrounds related to one of YCI’s key sectors.

Working in collaboration with our in-country staff and partners on one of YCI’s programming sectors, your group will contribute to a long-term community project while developing personal and professional skills. Your group will have the opportunity to fundraise and raise awareness as a team, develop your skills in an international, team-based setting and implement a specific program in conjunction with our local partners.

Previous Leadership Teams have included groups from the University of Waterloo, Memorial University and Ryerson University, who have contributed to programs in Ghana, Tanzania, Kenya and Panama.

Key Features:

  • Suitable for university student groups or professional groups of five to 10 volunteers.
  • Customized team-based program of four to 10 weeks.
  • Flexible departure dates.
  • Ability to focus on a specific programming objective and sector of interest.
  • Countries: Kenya, Tanzania or Ghana.
  • Fundraising targets range from $2,800 to $3,900 per participant.

Global Professionals
The Global Professionals program is a new program for professionals with development experience and related academic background to engage in short or long-term projects.

Volunteers for the Global Professionals program will be placed with one of our existing partners and have the opportunity for focused partner and volunteer support, as well as programming. Build upon your existing experience, work closely with YCI staff and partners, collaborate with volunteers and interns and utilize your skills in program implementation and project management.

  • Customized projects for individuals with relevant academic or professional backgrounds.
  • Short-term or long-term programs ranging in length from a few weeks to a year.
  • Rolling departure dates.
  • Ability to focus on a specific programming objective and sector of interest.
  • Countries: Guyana, Ghana, Kenya or Tanzania.
