GHANA
Ghana was previously known as the Gold Coast.  Following its independence from Britain in 1957 Ghana was producing one tenth of the world's gold and exporting large amounts of cocoa. Ghana also possesses one of the best game reserves in West Africa, a multitude of good beaches, and plenty of hospitality. Ghanaians are known throughout the world for kindness. From the handmade batiks to the traditional drumming, Ghana overflows with art. Wood carvings, glass beads, drums, Kente cloth, straw baskets, and mud cloth are made and marketed all over Ghana.

Well endowed with natural resources, Ghana has twice the per capita output of the poorer countries in West Africa. Even so, Ghana remains heavily dependent on international financial and technical assistance. Like many other African countries, Ghana is suffering from problems of poverty, HIV/AIDS and a high rate of youth unemployment. YCI in partnership with YMCA Canada/Ghana has begun exciting new programming using innovative peer methodologies in the implementation of activities and projects focused on youth employability skills training.

Ghana has much to see outside of project. It boasts incredible rain forests and reserves featuring lions, leopards, elephants, baboons and hippos! Ghana is rich with art, culture, history, wildlife, scenery, and incredible people.
