The 17th Annual International Development week has arrived and is this week - Sunday February 4th to Saturday February 10th. The aim of this week is to raise awareness about ongoing development efforts throughout the world, and to challenge Canadians to get involved in international development work and become Global Citizens. The theme of this year's International Development Week is Gender Equality and the aim is to highlight the fundamental link between gender issues and positive development worldwide. • Check out CIDA's website to read more about why Gender Equality was chosen for this year's theme. Recently, our very own YCI alumnus Danny Richmond had the opportunity to accompany the Governor General on the recent state visit to Africa and has written an article on the power of the female spirit he witnessed in Her Excellency and in Africa. While the week is very important for reminding us of the inequality that still exists for women and girls, we at YCI are confronted by these issues every week of the year. Read more... ![]() ![]() YCI's new Volunteer Advisory Council was an effort launched in 2006 to engage young people across Canada in grassroots community development projects AND advise the organization on youth issues. The action network is divided into teams that focus on issues such as Food Security, Environmental Sustainability and Gender Equality. Elizabeth McCarville is no exception. Elizabeth went to Tanzania on a 10 week project with YCI in the fall of 2005. Now she is in Rwanda through a CIDA internship. Click here to read her first hand account of life in Rwanda and how her time volunteering with YCI has helped her get where she is today. ![]() ![]() This month we would like to highlight two organizations that are doing amazing work around the world: The Stephen Lewis Foundation funds community-based initiatives in Africa. Their funding works in four major areas: providing care to suffering women, assisting orphans and AIDS affected children, supporting grandmothers – "the unsung heroes of Africa", and supporting associations of people living with HIV/AIDS. This organization's unique focus on gender issues as a part in the HIV/AIDS crisis has raised the profile of women. Visit the foundation's website to learn more and get involved! The Association for Women's Rights in Development (AWID) is an international membership organization that aims to "connect, inform and mobilize people and organizations committed to achieving gender equality, sustainable development and women's human rights".
