On December 1st, 2006, millions of people around the world will be marking World Aids Day. The statistics continue to be daunting – over three quarters of all cases of HIV/AIDS occur in sub-Saharan Africa. Although it has hit Africa particularly hard it is important for us to remember that AIDS is not an African disease – it is a global disease. All of the countries we work in, including Canada, need to be deeply concerned about HIV/AIDS.
This past August, Toronto hosted the International AIDS2006 Conference. YCI was luckly to be able to participate in this important conference in multiple ways. Four of our international partners were able to come to Toronto for the event and all partiated with YCI staff and volunteers to lead a session on Youth Culture and HIV/AIDS. One international partner, Makoti Edwin, came all the way from Tanzania for the event and was able to make lots of connections during his time here. ![]()

The project was created by two young women - Jocelyn Land-Murphy and Jessica Lax - in Kenya in 2001. "Otesha" means "Reason to Dream" in Swahili and the project aims to challenge people to do just that. Visit the website and ask yourself "What would your ideal world look like?"
