Environmental Sustainability and Essential Services
The lack of infrastructure in many communities where YCI is working continues to be a permanent obstacle to development. Many youth have limited access to educational and health care facilities in addition to other essential services such as clean drinking water. Environmental planning and conservation can also often be overlooked in a community’s development.

Objective: To provide support for basic construction projects and environmental development projects in rural communities.

YCI works with local planners in implementing the following:
  1. Building of Essential Services: YCI assists with locally designed building projects that typically include the construction of schools, playgrounds, systems to provide clean drinking water, community centres and health posts. Many of the facilities are then used to house further community programming that might include YCI’s training in employability and entrepreneurship, HIV/AIDS and healthy sexuality, gender equity, as well as active citizenship and governance.

  2. Environmental Sustainability Projects: YCI also supports the development of local environmental initiatives. Projects include the construction of ventilation improved privies, the clearing of trails for national parks and rainforests, the creation and posting of signs for park trails, and the construction of eco-tourism centres.
